The Catholic Church reformed, and got back some people who became Protestant before. The reforms were led by Spain which was a fully Catholic country. It stopped selling indulgences, and popes started preaching the religion. The church tried to stop effects of Protestant Reformation mainly by re-establishing the authorities of the pope. Ignatius Loyaola was the founder society of Jesuits, who practiced moderation, which meant that you would get salvation by good works and praying. The Council of Trent resulted in many countries in southern Europe, like Spain, Italy, France to be Catholic.

The Catholic Counter Reformation was when the Catholic Church "reformed" itself, and got back some people which converted back into Catholic. During this time, the Catholic Church banned the sales of indulgences, but still believed that you need faith and good deeds to get into heaven. The Index of Forbidden Books were made and the Catholics made people go through the Inquisition, a torture process to condemn "heretics", which were people who go against the Church.

THE COUNTER REFORMATION: THE POPE REASSERTS HIS AUTHORITYAN

THE CATHOLIC CHURCH REFORMED ITSELF DURING THE 16TH CENTURY, WHICH WAS CALLED THE CATHOILC REFORMATION OR COUNTER-REFORMATION. THE CHURCH DID NOT RESPOND WELL TO THE NEW RELIGIOUS WAYS. LUTHER REFUSED TO WITHDRAW AND GERMAN PRINCES STARTED TO FOLLOW LUTHERANISM,THE CATHOLIC CHURCH BEGAN TO ORGANIZE REFORMS, LED BY SPAIN. THE CATHOLIC CHURH GAINED SOME OF ITS CREDIBILITY BY FORBIDDING THE SALE OF INDULGENCES, TALKING MORE WITH THE BISHOPS AND PARISHES, AND TEACHING PRIESTS TO LIVE THE LIFE THEY PREACHED. THE CHURCH MADE IT CLEAR THAT, THEY WERE NOT SURRENDERING TO PROTESTANT DEMANDS, BUT IN FACT, CLARIFYING THEIR POSITION. THE SUPREME AUTHORITY OF THE POPE, WAS RE ESTABLISHED AND WEEKLY MASS BECAME AN OBLIGATION. AT THIS TIME A SPANISH SOLDIER, IGNATIUS LOYOLA, FOUNDED THE SOCIETY OF JESUITS, WHICH BECAME BENEFICIAL IN RESTORING THE FAITH OF JESUS' TEACHINGS, AS DEFINED BY THE CATHOLIC CHURCH. THE JESUITS, BELIEVED IN PRAYER,PRACTICED SELF CONTROL. MODERATION, AND THAT GOOD WORKS LED TO SALVATION. THEY HAD STRICTER TRAINING SYSTEMS AND HIGH EXPECTATIONS FROM THEIR CLERGY. THE COUNCIL OF TRENT, WHICH WAS COMPRISED OF CHURCH OFFICALS, LED THE COUNTER-REFORMATION FROM 1545-1563. THEY INTERPRETED THE RELIGIOUS DOCTRINE OF THE CATHOLICS AND CLARIFIED THEIR POSITION ON THE NATURE OF SALVATION. THE EFFECTS WERE THAT THE CATHOLIC CHURCH BECAME RE-ESTABLISHED. THE COUNTER-REFORMATION WAS SUCCESSFUL IN SPREADING PROTESTANTISM SOUTHWARD. BY 1600, SOUTHERN EUROPE, FRANCE, AND SOUTHERN GERMANY WERE MAINLY CATHOLIC. NORTHERN GERMANY AND SCANDINAVIA WERE MAINLY LUTHERAN. SCOTLAND, CALVINIST, ALONG WITH PARTS OF CENTRAL EUROPE AND FRANCE. ENGLAND WAS ANGLICAN.

During the 16th century, the Catholic Church tried to bring back those who turned to Protestantism. After German princes started to convert to Lutheranism, the church, led by Spain, started to take action. The church regained some of its solidity by banning the sale of indulgences and by having the priests live a Catholic life instead of just preaching it. They were not giving in to the Protestants, they were just making their position clear. Ignatius Loyola founded the society of Jesuits, who believed in self control and moderation, and ultimately salvation. A higher standard was set for clergy and Jesuits gained higher political positions. The Council of Trent reinstated the church's position on religious questions and other religious doctrine. Heretics were punished and Latin returned as the language of worship. The church has a lasting comeback and stopped the spread of Protestantism. By 1600, southern Europe, France and southern Germany were Catholic.

In the Sixteenth century during the Catholic Reformation or as one may call it the counter reformation the Catholic Church reformed by gainning back the people who turned to Protestantism. The Catholic Church started to take action by beginning to institute reforms when German princes started converting to Lutheranism and Luther refused to recant. The Catholic Church banned the selling of indulgences, consulted more often with the bishops as well as parishes and trained its priests all to gain some of their lost credibility. Also the supreme authority of the pope was re-established and it was the poeple's obligation to attend mass every week. During this time the society of Jesuits was founded by Ignatius Loyola. In this Society moderation as well as self-control was practiced and the Jesuits gained a belief that prayer and good works led to salvation. The Council of Trent reinstated the church's position on religious questions and religious doctrines. All of this led the Church to an amazing comeback where the counter reformation proved to be a success.

Indulgences were canceled and the pope started to preached that salvation can be achieved by good will. Not a lot of the earlers converters came back to being catholic but a few did. During this time a new group known as the society of the Jesuits were formed. It was found by Ignatius Loyola. They practiced self discipline and followed the religion very closely. The so called counter reformation occurred as a result of the protestant reformation. Due to the many accuses made upon it, the church was carrying around a taint. In order to get rid of the church decided to make some changes and they started by forming the council of trent. It was mainly formed to end the corruption from within the church. They started off by getting rid of indulgences. This some what bought them back their good name back as the followers of God but it did not help it fully recover from the attacks made upon it during the protestant reformation. The counter reformation also gave a rise to the society of Jesuits. It was founded bu Ignatius Loyola and they practiced moderation and were very disciplined and close followers of the religion.

The Catholic Counter Reformation of the 16th century was started because during the Protestant Reformation a lot of people went against the Catholic Church and some converted to Protestant or Lutheran. They tried to stop the effects of the Protestant Reformation by reforming itself and by banning the selling of indulgences. They also trained their priests to live by the Catholic life. Weekly mass became obligatory and Latin was once again the language used in church. Ignatius Loyola founded the society of Jesuits who started spreading the Catholic religion again. The Council of Trent was formed. This was a group of officials that dealt with the reforming of the church. They tried and punished heretics by using the means of the Inquisition. The Catholic Church regained some of its popularity and the counter reformation was a success.

The Catholic Reformation begun in order to regain some of the old Catholic believers who had turned over to Luther and his teachings. They began their plan by banning the selling of indulgences and getting more bishops and parishes. Priests also began to live the Catholic lifestyle and started to teach it by making weekly masses. A group by the name of the Jesuits was also formed by Ignatius Loyola. This group helped regain the faith of old believers of the Catholic Church. They believed in prayer, which was said to be the key to salvation. Another group involved in the Catholic Reformation was the Council or Trent. This group clarified the Catholic Church's position and had been around for the punishiments of heretics. Soon, the Catholic Church had regained most of its believers, making them successful for reaching their goal.

The Counter-reformation consisted of the CatholicChurch reforming it's ways. It stopped selling theIndulgences and managed to gain back some of its followers. The church began to train priests to live as Catholics rather than just preaching it and thsi managed to gain back some lost credibility. The Church was reaffirming itself more than reforming though. It made it clear that it wasnt giving into Protestant demands, but it was just clarifying itself. The Pop was given supreme power once again and you were obligated to attend Sunday mass. The Coucil of Trent helped to strenghten the Church as well. Latin language was used once againa nd "heretics" were tried again. The Catholic Church "staged and amazing comback."

The catholic Chruch did much to regain its lost followers, who had converted to the teachings of such people as Martin Luther, and other protestant leaders, during the protestant Reformation. The counter-Reformation, lead mostly by Spain, banned the sale of indulgences. in addition, priests were taught to live the Catholic life, not just preach it. They also re-established the authorities of the Pope. ignatius Loyola founded the Society of the jesuits, and preached the new catholic reforms. The council of trent was also formed, which, in turn, lead to many countries to convert to catholicism.

The Catholic Church lost many of its believers and needed to regain them back. Spain was a very Catholic country and was a main leader in the attempt to regain the followers. The Church began to take action by banning the sale of indulgences, and consulted more with bishops and parishes. Priests were also trained to live a Catholic life, instead of merely preaching it. These efforts helped the Catholic Church regain some of its lost respect. Although they made many changes, the Church stood by when they said that they would now bow down to Protestant demands. Weekly mass became mandatory and the power of the pope was res-established. During this time, former Spanish solider Ignatius Loyola founded the society of Jesuits. This was a group of people, who were interested in restoring the faith and teachings of Jesus, that the Catholic Church had interfered with.

Luther allowed people to be informed on his strong opinion. He believed that people did not need a church or priests ti interact or believe in god, the only thing needed was a bible or a sacred book.He showed others it was okay to question and doubt the church this led others to as well. The Protestant Reformation moved to revolutions in education, politics, and science.During the Catholic Reformation the church had reformed itself. Ever since the Protestant Reformation the church had lost a lot of followers because of the people’s lack of trust for them anymore. The church knew they had to do something about this, so they had started to reform themselves by, stopping the sale of indulgences and training priests to actually the live the Catholic life instead of just preaching it; the church had regained some trust from some people by doing this. Later a former Spanish soldier and intellectual, Ignatius Loyola, had founded the society of Jesuits. Jesuits had practiced self-control and moderation. The Council of Trent had held the position of authority during the counter-reformation from 1545 to 1563. During this period heretics had once again started to be punished and they had made Latin the official language to be used in worship. The counter-reformation was a success, but wars had broke out because of all this later.
