Many people in Prussia wanted to unify the German territories into a powerful empire. In 1861 William I appointed Otto von Bismarck prime minister with the goal of building the military and uniting the region under its territory. Bismarck had to first defeat Austria, which he did in seven weeks. Through more wars and annexation he secured most of the other German principalities. He formed an alliance with the Catholic German states against France and in 1870 provoked France to declare war on Prussia which started the Franco-Prussian War. In 1871 Bismarck won and crowned William I as emperor of the new German Empire which is also known as the Second Reich. After unification Germany industrialized. Because many socialist did not like Bismarck he was forced to resign as prime minister in 1890.

After the Congress of Vienna, Germany was now made up of 39 states. However, it was dominated by its two largest states which were Prussia and Austria-Hungary. The Prussian king Wilhelm I, made Otto von Bismarck the prime minister giving him lots of power. Bismarck's goals to unify Germany were to be accomplished by his policy realpolitik. BY 1867, the Northen German States came together and dominated Germany. Bismarck then published a fake telegram to France insulting Napolean III. Napolean got very angry and declared war against Prussia which resulted in the Franco-Prussian War. The Prussian army won the war and southern Germany now accepted to unify with northern Germany. Wilhelm I of Prussia was crowned kaiser and Bismarck was then dismissed. The Second Reich had begun.

Many have tried to unite the 39 German states in an effort to make it one of the European power houses. This action was taken when Prussian king William I named Otto von Bismark as prime minister. In only seven weeks Bismark defeated Austria. He united the rest of the north with wars, which he believed were the only way he could form a unified Germany. He later formed an alliance with Catholic German States and fought against France in the Franco-Prussian War. Of course, Prussia won and the German Catholic states were under Prussian control. He then named the nation the new German Empire(Second Reich)and crowned King William I as emperor.

German Power increased even more when William II was crowned new emperor and Germany quickly industrialized. He kicked Bismark out of office, built a powerful navy and started conquering African and Asian lands. By 1914, Germany was one of the most powerful nations in Europe.

Many people in Prussia wanted to unify the 39 German states. Therefore in 1861 William The First made Otto von Bismarck the prime minister. He focused on building and unifing Germany. He defeated Austria only in seven weeks and annexed the states he conqured to Germany. Later Bismarck formed an alliance with the Catholic German states and provoked France to declare war on Prussia, which Bismarck won. Crowned King William the First as emperor of the new German Empire(Second Reich). Because of this Germany quickly industrialized. But Otto lost his popularity among socialists, and the new emperor William 2 forced Otto out in 1890. Germany built huge navy, pursued colinial ambitions in Africa and Asia and became the most powerful nations in the world by 1914

Bismarck was winning over territories from Austria, and then formed an alliance with the souther german states to put an attack on the french, by provoking them into war with Prussia. The Franco-Prussian war had won Bismarck many more territories from the French. Bismarck had crowned Willian I, as emperor of the new German Empire. The German Empire was now known as the Second Reich. Germany had now had a strong economic and political power. However Bismarck was soon forced to resign under William II.

Otto Von Bismarck wanted to unify Germany by building up the military and consolidating the reign under its authority. In order to accomplish this Bismarck had to conquer Austria, which he did in 7 weeks. With more war he acquired most of the German doctrines, except from areas in the south that had many catholics. He developed an alliance with catholic German states against agression from France. This provoked France to declare war on Prussia in 1870, beginning the Franco-Prussian War. After this war was won he unified the German Catholic areas under Prussian control.
