In 1849 when Victor Emmanuel II named Count Camillo Cavour his prime minister nationalism in Italy took off. Both these men believed strongly in Italian unification. Through wars, Cavour sided with Europe and managed to remove Austrian influence from Italy by 1859. Giuseppe Garibaldi (Italian nationalist) also made an army and in 1860 drove Spain from the Kingdom of Two Sicilies. By 1861 a large part of Italy was unified and declared itself a unified kingdom under Victor Emmanuel. Italy had a hard time unifying culturally because it had developed more regionally.

The movement to unify Italy began in 1832. Giuseppe Mazzini began to lead revolutions sparking people's interest in a unified Italy. He is considered "the soul" of the unification of Italy. However, Count Camillo Cavour was the brain. He was the prime minister of the Kingdom of Sardinia-Piedmont. He gained control of Northern Italy by starting a war with Austria. Cavour then had Garibaldi and his Red Shirts capture Sicily. The Italians won the war and in 1866 the province of Venetia was added the to the Italian territory. Cavour gained control of the Papal States from the pope by giving him Vatican City, a section of Rome that would continue to be governed by the pope. Although Italy managed to become a unified country, many economic and social problems occured pressuring the industrial north and the agricultural south.

Italy was mainly controlled by others, Austria ruled the provinces of Venetia and Lombardy, Spanish ruled the kingdom of Sicily, and the Papal states were controlled by the church. Due to the rise of nationalism this led to a desire of unification of Italy.Victor Emmanuel II was the king oF Sardinia and Count Camillo Cavour his prime minister both strongly wanted the unification of Italy.Through many wars, with the help of European powers there was an attempt to bail out Austria from Italy. Eventually Austria was out of Italy. Giuseppe Garibaldi another Italian nationalist developed an army and carried Spain out of Sicily.By 1861 majority of Italy was unified under Emmanuel.

In the 1800's Italy was controlled by many other nations such as France, Austria and Spain. In 1849 King Victor Emmanuel I names Count Camillo Cavour prime minister. He made Italy very nationalistic and made people be proud of their Italian roots. He ended power of Austria in Italy by 1859. Then an Italian nationalist drove Spanish power out of Italy as well. By 1861 a large part of Italy was unified and King Emmanuel II was in control. They foudn a war against Austria siding with Prussia and gained Venetia as Italian territory. By 1870, Italians won control of Rome. Even thought Italy was now united, there were major differences between the north which was urbanized and the agricultural south.

After Napoleon's Era, most of the italian city-states were being controlled by many other different European countries. Only the kingdom of Sardinia was controlled by the Italians. Victor Emmanuel II names Count Camillo Cavour as the prime minster. Cavour had led many wars that ended the Austrian Influence in italy. Nationalism had taken off at this time. Giuseppe Garibaldi, an italian nationalist had led another army to get back the kingdom of two sicilies from the Spanish. The italians had succeeded. After siding with Prussia, the Italians had taken back Venetia, and then had gotten back Rome after the French withdrew. Even though Italy was already unified, people had a hard to time to unify culturally. People believe that they were better than other italians.

Although Italy was already unified, people had trouble unifying their cultures.Italians believed that they were better than other Italians of other city-states.

As a result of the Napoleonic Era, France, Spain, Portugal, Britain, and Russia were unified. But, Italy and German city-states were still constantly at war with European powers. By the end of the 2nd part of the a9th century Italyand Germany unified which changed the balance of European power. In the middle of the 19th century Italy was comprised of many foreign controlled kingdoms. Only the kingdom of Sardinia was controlled by Italy. In 1849, Victor Emmanuel II and Count Camillo Cavor believed in unifying Italy. Cavor with the help of European powers he conquered earlier, he was able to remove most of the Austrian influence from most of Italy except Venetia. At the same time, Guiseppi Garibaldi, who was an italian nationalist also got together a volunteer army and in 1860 rid Spain from the Kingdom of Two Sicilies. As a result, by 1861 most of Italy gained control over Venetia, when they decided to side with Prussia in a war against Australia and it finally won control of Rome in 1870, when the French withdrew.
